How about a meal in the house in the village? A visit to our house in the Village for lunch or dinner gives insights into the culinary art of the Bedouin women. Original food is prepared here. Different typical dishes are cooked.

Maqluba

One is an upsidedown chicken and rice dish. Its called Maqluba. In Arabic, the word means something like turned upside down“. Because thats what really happens in this dish. The ingredients, consisting of rice, chicken, potatoes and vegetables, are cooked in a pot and then turned upside down on a tray and the contents are poured out.

Zarnia

Another dish is Zarnia. Potatoes, chicken or lamb, vegetables such as tomatoes, eggplants, chilli, onions, spices are stewed. A dish that can be prepared in the oven, but also in the embers of the fire on a tour.

Beef Kofta

But also beef kofta with tahini, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, peppers and spices and fried in a gas oven is a dish in our family.

Bread, salad and yoghurt are always served with it. Nonalcoholic beverages are one of them.
Followed by a tea or coffee.

The more guests come to eat, the more diverse the different dishes become.

Organizational matters

Cars or buses can park at the house in the village in Disah. We send a GPS location beforehand.

Guests from our camp are driven by us.

We need some lead time to prepare the food for a large group of around 15 people or more. Booking around 2 days in advance is therefore necessary.

Important information

I advise bringing sunscreen. Furthermore, a scarf, which serves as a headgear, should be included. A hat is inconvenient due to the headwind while driving the jeep. A small backpack for the day is also useful. A flashlight or headlamp as well as toilet paper and small plastic bags for disposing of your rubbish are very useful for the night-time “toilet visit”.

Clothing: comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty. Good hiking shoes or trekking sandals with socks and a fleece or large, warm sweater for the night.

As for the sanitary facilities, there are neither showers nor toilets in the desert, but since the desert is huge, you can always find a quiet corner.

In general, it is important to always have a small plastic bag with you for rubbish. There will also be a trash can in the car.

Yes, thanks to the bivouac sites I have chosen (protected by the rock), the wood fire and our large blankets, the camp temperature is always comfortable and we sleep outside all year round.

Important: I cannot wash our mattresses and blankets between every visitor. If you are sensitive and would like to sleep on a very clean sheet, please bring your own duvets and sheets.

I work exclusively in hiking bivouacs. In fact, I am against any idea of fixed camps. These unfortunately too many and mostly illegal permanent installations destroy the landscape.

At the end of the day, I choose a spot sheltered by a rock and set up camp. We spend the evening, have dinner and sleep under the beautiful starry sky, warmed by the wood fire. Falling asleep looking at the Milky Way is an unforgettable experience. That’s why I prefer the nights under the stars.
